Chapter 15

Cora stared up at the ceiling, realizing that she was going to miss something as trivial as high ceilings. Van had basically just proposed to her. Could you do that to someone you met twenty-four hours ago? He told her secrets. He told her secrets and gave her an amazing orgasm. It hadn’t been a bad morning. At least before the eviction letter. It didn’t surprise her really. Chaz was cutting his losses. As far as he was concerned, a business deal that had no hopes of paying back its dividends should be expunged. His father would approve.

That’s what was happening. She was being expunged.

She should feel bad about it. Any woman would be devastated at the loss of a relationship of seven years. But if you haven’t felt anything for six of those years, it really didn’t count anymore, did it. Her heart just wasn’t in it.

But then, where was her heart?

Maybe it was with the big man in the kitchen that looked like the type of guy you would avoid on the street because he could squash you with one hand.

He was kind to her. Gentle even. He was making her breakfast. Chaz had never made her breakfast. Sure, he’d ordered it a few times, but he’d never actually cooked for her. Or made her coffee.

She liked breakfast. She liked breakfast foods. Brunch was like a sport to her. She wondered if Van was a brunch kind of guy.

“Do you like brunch?”

“Sorry?” he called out.

“Brunch. Do you like it?”

“Eating breakfast late?”

“No, well yes. But I mean do you like to do brunch?”

“I never understood why people called it ‘doing’ brunch. But I like food. I don’t really care when I eat it.”

“I like brunch. I like brunch food. It’s a mix of breakfast and lunch, hence the name,” she started deciding to give him a mini lesson. “I like the really good ones that hotels have. The kind that have those waffle bars and omelet stations. Even better if there’s a risotto station. I like the mix. The really good ones have seafood. That’s when you know you’re going to get your money’s worth. Lobster, croissants, all the decadent things you never allow yourself to eat unless it’s a special occasion. Start with breakfast foods, and then move right into lunch with mimosas on the side. Heaven.”

Van came around the corner with two plates. He set one down on the table next to her. Two pieces of toast with butter and a thick layer of orange marmalade. Next to it were apple slices and peanut butter in a small dish along with some pieces of cheddar cheese. It was a weird collection of food, but at that moment, it looked like the best hotel banquet.

“I picked things that will give you energy. We can save the brunches for later.”

“So you didn’t answer me. Do you like brunch?”

“Sweets, if you like brunch, I like brunch. Eat.”

Cora took a bite of toast. She chewed watching him as he wolfed down his food.
